Number of Brits moving to Spain rises by 12%
31.12.2008
The number of British people moving to Spain has increased by 12 per cent, making them the country's fourth-largest immigrant community, the Guardian reports.
According to figures released this week by the Spanish government, there were 352,000 British expats living in the country at the beginning of 2008 and experts predict that the trend will not slow, despite the falling value of the pound.
James Parker, editor of the English-language newspaper Costa Blanca News, told the Guardian: "Some people have had to head back to Britain recently but the impression is still that there are lots more just waiting for things to change so they can come over."
However, the Foreign Office believes this figure hugely under-represents the true number of Brits living in the country.
It said: "Around one million Britons now live permanently in Spain", suggesting that many are still refusing to register at town halls.
