Marinas now more popular than golf courses for property-buyers abroad
11.11.2008
According to overseas property experts, boat moorings in desirable areas are now more sought-after than golf facilities.
Furthermore, the cost of traditional berths on their own has given rise to a new wave of developments centred around marinas, with the price of a mooring included in the cost of a property, reports the Daily Telegraph.
James Price of estate agency Knight Frank told the newspaper: "Marinas have overtaken golf as the key driver at the top end of the second-homes market."
He added that the numbers of yachts and super-yachts meant demand could only increase.
Mike and Rita Cullen, from Dorset, are buying a three-bedroom home at the Ribera del Marlin development in Sotogrande, southern Spain.
He told the publication: "Location is the key and marina life is fantastic: everything accretes around them. They are magnets for people who don't even own boats."
Spain is ranked the top country for its marinas and beaches according to the Blue Flag project, which hands out accolades to countries for the cleanliness and quality of their coastal areas.
Greece and Turkey occupy the second and third places in the scheme, according to hurriyet.com.
