Barcelona voted Europe's top holiday destination

24.11.2009

Barcelona is seen as the leading holiday hotspot in Europe, according to the results of a major survey.

Global market research company OnePoll questioned around 10,000 holidaymakers across the continent and found widespread enthusiasm for the Spanish city's 'beautiful parks, beaches and Catalonian architecture'.

A spokesperson for the firm said that Barcelona 'fits the bill for so many people' as it is easily accessible and enjoys good weather.

Paris was found to be the second most popular destination, followed by Rome, Venice and the Lake District.

The research highlighted the affection that travellers have for Spain and its many hotspots, with Madrid, Benidorm, Malaga, Ibiza, Mallorca and other destinations all appearing in the top 20.

Chamonix in France was found to be the most popular spot for winter sports, while Prague was named the leading short break destination for couples.

Sports and golf fans named La Manga in Spain their leading hotspot, while those who enjoy sightseeing showed a preference for Edinburgh.
