Eurostat: Lowest employment rate in Spain in Q2

Amongst the countries that make up the Eurozone, Spain had the lowest employment rate in the second quarter of 2009. On an annualized basis, there was a drop of -7.1% in people employed in the country.
The drop was 1.8% in the Eurozone, whilst in the EU there was a contraction of 1.9%. Again, on an annualised basis, Portugal recorded a drop in employment of 2.7%, Slovenia 1.6%, France 1.1%, whilst Greece employment dropped 1%, Italy 0.9%, Malta 0.8% and Cyprus 0.5%.
Compared to the previous quarter however, according to data made available by Eurostat, Slovenia recorded the greatest drop of 1.4%, followed by Spain (-1.3%), and then Portugal (-0.9%) and France (-0.4%). Italy was stable whilst Greece saw an increase of 0.3%. In the Eurozone, the drop in employed people in the second quarter of the year, compared to the first quarter, was 0.5%, against an average drop in the EU 27 of 0.6%.
